- Home for the Holidays: Water Efficiencies
Home for the Holidays: Water Efficiencies 11/19/24, 1:00 PM As you prepare for holiday cooking, hosting, and celebrating, follow our top tips for improved water efficiency - and conservation! Give Up Dish Duty Scrape food waste into the trashcan and use your dishwasher (if you have one) to save water, energy, money, and time! Use the Veggie Water Cycle Wash vegetables in a bowl of water rather than running water over them - and then use that water in your garden! Water Your Guests Keep a pitcher of cold water accessible for guests during meals - they can refill if needed rather than starting over with a fresh or full glass! Shorten Those Showers Encourage guests to take shorter showers to reduce water waste - and help ensure that everyone enjoys a hot shower! Thaw Your Turkey Plan ahead and thaw your turkey in the refrigerator rather than wasting cold water. (Make sure you place your turkey in a pan first!) Get Steaming Think about steaming your vegetables instead of boiling them to preserve flavor and conserve water. Load Up More cooking - and more houseguests - means more laundry! Run full loads to reduce the overall number of loads of laundry. Do Some Leak Detection The more people in your home, the more your toilets, tubs, and sinks are in use. Check for leaks - and faulty flappers - to reduce water waste and expense! Download the Complete Holiday Water Efficiencies Guide Back
- Commissioners | Jeff Fogle | Easley Combined Utilities
Jeff Fogle, Commissioner When I think back to when I first decided I would like to serve as a commissioner, I remember considering it as both a resident and a customer. As a long-time resident of the City of Easley, I had always admired the employees of ECU. And as a customer, I recognized and appreciated the reliability and customer service of ECU. The opportunity to serve on the Commission was, to me, a good way to offer myself to public service for a quality organization. My desire was, and continues to be, to help continue this excellent track record. What is something that you wish customers knew about Easley Combined Utilities? I would like all customers to know that Easley is in partnership with nine other cities in the Piedmont Municipal Power Agency (PMPA) , and as such, is an owner of its primary power source. PMPA is 25% owner of Unit #2 at Catawba Nuclear Station. This investment provides the citizens of Easley with reliable, affordable power. What do you consider the biggest “win” for ECU during your time as a commissioner? Hurricane Helene swept through our community in late September 2024. While this was a devastating storm, I consider the response of our team at Easley Combined Utilities the biggest win in my time as a commissioner. Each member of the team stepped up in so many ways. I'm so proud of the team! Their attitude and relentless work ethic they displayed was an inspiration! Easley is seeing an incredible amount of growth. How have previous projections – and associated planning – enabled ECU to meet the needs of our community? I think this well-known statement is applicable here: "If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail". Our executive leadership team members are continual planners. Regular assessments of each of our utilities (water, sewer, and electricity) are conducted. This information has assisted ECU in dedicating resources to maintain our aging systems and, in certain cases, grow our systems. You have a rare Saturday in Easley without anything on the calendar. How do you spend it? I would begin my day with breakfast at The Huddle. Then you could find me reading a good book, followed by a nap. I’d close out the day with a walk around the neighborhood. About Jeff Jeff and his wife Cindi met on a blind date over 35 years ago. Together, they have two adult daughters, Rebekah and Megan. Jeff loves to read and follows college sports. jfogle@easleyutilities.com 864-230-1137

- Watershed Manager Recognized with Clean Water Champion Award
Watershed Manager Recognized with Clean Water Champion Award 4/29/25, 4:00 PM Easley Combined Utilities (ECU) is proud to share that Watershed Manager Melanie Ruhlman is this year’s Upstate Forever “Clean Water Champion.” Easley Combined Utilities (ECU) is proud to share that Watershed Manager Melanie Ruhlman is this year’s Upstate Forever “Clean Water Champion.” Ruhlman received the award at the 2025 ForeverGreen Annual Awards Luncheon on April 22. Hosted by Upstate Forever , ForeverGreen is an event dedicated to recognizing individuals who are dedicated to land conservation, water resource protection, and public service across upstate South Carolina. Ruhlman manages the Upper Saluda Watershed above Saluda Lake, the body of water that provides raw water to residents of the City of Easley, South Carolina. Through programs designed to reduce soil runoff, watershed management helps reduce sediment and ultimately improves water quality. “I can only echo the sentiments expressed by others during the awards ceremony. Melanie continues to be a tremendous asset to our organization and our community – much like the water she manages, she’s a vital resource. She brings innovative solutions to the forefront of our conservation efforts and even more than generating ideas, she generates action. Melanie works tirelessly to guarantee the health of the watershed and the quality of water we’re able to deliver. But then again, I don’t think she calls it work. It’s her passion,” said Andy Sevic, General Manager of Easley Combined Utilities. Download the Complete Press Release Photo courtesy of Upstate Forever Back
